The LaPorte Hospital Foundation Breast Cancer Detection Project at Starke Memorial Hospital is an established comprehensive effort for early detection of breast cancer in our service area by encouraging and educating adult women in early detection practices.  This particular effort will help provide screening mammograms to underserved women who meet ACS High Risk status as well as those forty years of age and older.  Thru funds raised from sales of the Indiana Breast Cancer Awareness License Plate, mammograms are provided to women who are low-income, uninsured and asymptomatic.  This project consists of two major parts:  education and breast health awarness as well as provision of cost-free mammograms to women who meet qualifying criteria.  The Indiana Breast Cancer Awareness Trust provides funding for screening mammograms, while  Susan G. Komen for the Cure Northern Indiana funds comprehensive diagnostic testing, including bi-lateral and unilateral ultrasounds and follow-up mammograms for those women who need additional follow-up services.
