2012 Nancy Jaynes Memorial Scholarship Applications Being Accepted

IBCAT is currently accepting applications for the 2012 Nancy Jaynes Memorial Scholarship. The scholarship of up to $1,500 for college or post-secondary technical schooling is awarded to an Indiana High School Senior(s) whose parent is battling breast cancer or who has lost a parent to breast cancer.

The Nancy Jaynes Memorial Scholarship Award is named in honor of the founder of the Indiana Breast Cancer Awareness Trust (IBCAT), Nancy Jaynes. Nancy lost her battle with breast cancer in March 2008. A Plymouth (Indiana) High School Family and Consumer Sciences teacher, Nancy envisioned the breast cancer license plate to be a traveling billboard and reminder about the importance of early detection and prevention of breast cancer.

The application deadline is February 11, 2012.

License Plate Sales Funds 48 Early Detection Programs Across Indiana

Proceeds from the more than 17,000 Breast Cancer Awareness license plates sold in 2011 will be used to fund 48 screening mammography programs for women in need across Indiana. The Indiana Breast Cancer Awareness Trust (IBCAT) has awarded more than $342,000 in grants to support these programs in 2012.

Consistently a top ten selling specialty plate at the BMV, IBCAT has awarded more than $1.6 million in grants from plate sales since its inception in 2001 which have funded more than 10,000 mammograms state-wide.

Flossie Crowe of Little York, Indiana and an IBCAT grant beneficiary, tells her story of the life-saving mammogram she wouldn’t have gotten without assistance. Other highlights of the program are also featured in the video.

So keep buying the Breast Cancer Awareness plate. It’s making a difference in Indiana!

Lawrence County Cancer Patient Services Cancer Survivor Reception

The Lawrence County Cancer Patient Services is hosting an their Annual Free Cancer Survivor’s Reception on Sunday, October 9th. Any Lawrence County cancer survivor and one guest is invited to attend. Is your hospital, health clinic or community outreach organization looking for an opportunity to provide free mammography services to under-served women? If so, now is the time to apply for a 2012 grant from the Indiana Breast Cancer Awareness Trust. IBCAT is currently accepting applications for both our Large Grant and Mini-Grant programs. An IBCAT grant is a great way for you to implement free breast cancer screenings in your community. This year both programs will run on an annual cycle beginning January 1. In the past, our Mini-Grant program was a six-month grant. Program guidelines include -

Funding is limited to screening mammography expenses based on the currently published reimbursement rate.
Project must be specific to providing screening mammograms to under-served women.
American Cancer Society (ACS) guidelines for screening mammography should be followed.
Mammography service providers must be American College of Radiology (ACR) certified.
Applicants must be a U.S. nonprofit (federally tax-exempt) organization.
Services are provided within the State of Indiana.

Grant application must be postmarked no later than Friday, September 30th. Applications and full details are available on our Grant Programs page.

Southeastern Indiana Cancer Health Network Offers Free Mammograms to Ripley and Franklin County Women

The purpose of the Southeastern Indiana Cancer Health Network project is to provide no cost breast cancer screening to 80 rural, low income, medically under-served women in Ripley and Franklin counties in Southeastern Indiana. In collaboration with county health department nurses, SEICHN will implement a “Breast Cancer Screening Program” which includes mobile mammography, CBE and a focused education program.

Scott Memorial Making a Difference in Indiana’s Unhealthiest County by offering Free Mammograms

“Reaching Those in Need” is the focus of Scott Memorial Hospital’s grant from the Indiana Breast Cancer Awareness Trust. Scott Memorial serves many patients who are financially compromised and undereducated since Scott County is one of the poorest counties in Indiana. This grant allows us to provide this important cancer screening to many women who otherwise would not be able to receive it. As a past recipient of this grant, the grant staff has established that being involved and present in the community is one of the keys to being successful in dissolving the barriers that stand in our way. Our desire to educate all women on the importance of breast health is still thriving. Proper self-breast exam is a key component to breast health as are health lifestyle choices. Scott Memorial Hospital is dedicated to fighting the war against breast cancer.
